Nauvoo Presbyterian Church (1855 – )

The Nauvoo Presbyterian Church was organized March 18, 1855 at the Seventies’ Hall by Rev. N. W. Williams, of Keokuk, Iowa presiding.

The original named members were:

  • Samuel Chapman – ruling elder
  • John Rice – ruling elder
  • Mrs. H. Elliott
  • Mrs. Louise Walthus
  • Mrs. H. A. Carey
  • Mrs. John Rice
  • Mrs. M. E. Powers
  • Miss Sarah Dewey
  • I. D. Stevens – ruling elder

Pastors who served prior to 1880 included:

  • Rev. W. A. B. McCuistion (1824-8 Mar 1851), who served church in Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa, from 1849 until his death at age 26y 10m 6d while pastor of the church. Buried in Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis, Iowa).
  • Rev. Waldenmeyer
  • Rev. Rice

Adam Swartz, Esq., became a member “at an early date” and has acted as Clerk since 1868.
