Discussion

Lewis Yancey Beadles is listed in the 1820 Federal Census of Caswell County, North Carolina. All of his children claim to have born in Virginia, probably in Pittsylvania County. These two counties adjoin across the Virginia-North Carolina border.

Lewis Y. Beadles' residence in 1830 is not known, but in late November of 1831 he purchased about 1300 acres of land in Graves County, Kentucky. [See land records] Graves County is located within the Jackson Purchase in western Kentucky.

All eight of Lewis Beadles' known children also made homes in Graves County, the eldest two having married in Virginia and North Carolina. Lewis' son-in-law Jerman Wingo also bought land in November 1831.

Lewis' son William Beadles was a clerk at the first store, opened by Dr. Wilkerson, in Mayfield, Kentucky. About 1868, William moved to Paducah and established the First National Bank of Paducah. He served as the bank President until his death. [4]

Lewis' son James Nicholas Beadles was reared on his father's farm. About 1843, he moved to Mayfield where he worked in merchandising for nearly 20 years. He was a bank cashier for several years. He worked with the Mayfield Branch of the Bank of Ashland, his brother William's First National Bank of Paducah and he organized the Bank of Mayfield. In the 1860s and 1870s he worked in New Orleans in the general commission business. [5]

Those researching the descendants of Lewis Y. Beadles in the Jackson Purchase area of Kentucky and Tennessee should keep in mind that another Beadles family lived in this area. About 1829, Bassett Beadles' family appears in Weakley County, Tennessee, across the Tennessee-Kentucky border from Graves County. Bassett's sons include: William A., Duke A., Frank G., Bassett, and Joe Beadles. They and their descendants migrated into Graves and the adjoining counties. There is presumably a relationship between Bassett and Lewis, although it appears they were not brothers.
